Pitched Battle HE v Dwarves

Posted by Anonymous | Labels: | Posted On Friday, July 23, 2010 at Friday, July 23, 2010

So we bumped up to 3000 points and we lucked out by rolling the straight up pitched battle, So at least we didn't have to learn a new battle. And for this battle you get....

no battle report.

Instead you get my rant about people complaining about all the draw backs in casting magic.

In three games magic has only been a positive for me, and in this past game, magic won the battle for me. One archmage managed to kill, a dragon slayer, a cannon, a grudge thrower, 10 quarrelers, and did one wound to the anvil of doom.

Uhm....how is this not a game changer? Quite honestly, if it weren't for my archmage I wouldn't have won. If you use magic, you may get burned every now and then, but if you avoid magic, you will no doubt play one person per tournament that is just crazy enough to use it.

Mountain pass High Elves v. Dwarves

Posted by Anonymous | Labels: | Posted On Tuesday, July 20, 2010 at Tuesday, July 20, 2010

And yet another battle has come and gone, and more secrets of the 8th edition game have revealed themselves.

This post is going to be less of a battle report and more of a rant/rave.

We rolled a mountain pass scenario; nothing too special just the the long table edges are impassable terrain. And speaking of terrain, this is the second time in a row that we have rolled an outpost of destruction, this time it had three buildings a haunted house and 6 6" segments of ghost fence. Along with that we had two other towers a grail chapel, and two sets of walls. Ultimately a lot of terrain has been used in both of our games.

I tried a few new things this battle and took, Korhil as my general, and 2 20 man units of seaguard. The rest was my usual fare.

Artillery is just wrong. I kind of saw this during my perusal of the rules a few weeks before the release, but simply put near auto hits with artillery with no way to gain a cover save like in 40K was absolutely devastating to my army. I lost 20 seagaurd to just 2 grudge thrower shots. That's 1 grudge thrower 2 rounds I lost 260 points of troops to a war machine that is less than half the cost. The damage would've been worse except for I ran my fast cav back there as quickly as I could to stop the death from above. While I did manage to destroy the machine it was not until the crew had killed 3 of the 5 reavers in close combat. the remaining 2 were killed the next turn by cannon fire. =(

Korhil is pretty awesome, but fragile like most elves. Unfortunately, by the time Korhil's unit made it into combat all that was left was a full command and Korhil. Korhil issued a challenge and which was accepted by the champion of the unit. Korhil has 4 attacks ASF which usually lets him reroll misses is S7 and has killing blow. Korhil managed to kill the champion doing 3 wounds one of which was a killing blow anyways. The next turn however the challenge was ignored, and while yes the runesmith was sent to the back of the unit Korhil was done in by ordinary troops.

Magic the ultimate double edged sword. I LIKE IT. Mainly, because it is the only thing I have going for me. I took an Arch Mage with lore of the heavans, and a mage with beasts. During the game I got of a baby comet, and 2 chain lightnings while I did manage to miscast twice the resulting damage pale in comparison.

The outcome of the game was a rout in favor of the dwarves, and while there are a few things that I could've done differently with the units that I had, I don't know how much it would've changed the game. Well, only thing left to do is try something else!

building a better tower

Posted by Anonymous | Labels: | Posted On Thursday, July 15, 2010 at Thursday, July 15, 2010

So, one of the things you may notice about 8th edition warhammer is the use of a lot of terrain. So I set out on making some more. Fortunately, our friends at the Cosmic Castle in Roanoke had a sale and I was able to pick up some new stuff to put together.

This afternoon I set to work on the tower. This is a great model. First the plastic is thick so you feel as if it can support the design you are about to build, and to top it off the details are wonderful; so much better than anything I could do from scratch.

My only complaint so far, and I'm about half way through, is that it is really difficult and not clear as to the 90 degree angles on the corners. So my tower is ever so slightly diamond shaped. I was able to get the tower together and you can't really tell its not square, but its gonna take some green stuff in one of the corners. As always pictures still to come.

1st 8th edition game turns 2-4

Posted by Anonymous | Labels: | Posted On Tuesday, July 13, 2010 at Tuesday, July 13, 2010

If you are just joining us, you may wish to read the post bellow this one first.

Turn 2 began with a successful charge of the watchtower by my beleaguered white lions, but my reavers continued to have trouble with the difficult terrain loosing 2 out of 3 models and failing a panic check, they would spend the rest of the game fleeing (you may now rally troops under 25% on a role of snake eyes. While this never happened for me I did manage to role 3 1's for distance moved once grrrrr.) So after promising to never abandon my dice again I asked them to start doing better. Magic was good again, but dispelled. Close combat saw my lions tear into the quarrelers not enough to kill them all and they are stubborn in a building so it was a draw and my lions had to take a step back from the building, great more shooting at them. Dwarven shooting was abysmal, and I think we got a poor representation of how awesome artillery really is. It wasn't Justin's fault but fate is a capricious mistress indeed. Both cannons rolled a misfire for their first roll so he used a rune of forging, the next rolls were successful in that they didn't misfire, but he was going to need it to bounce to cause any damage, and then both cannons rolled a misfire again. (Which lead us to two questions; what are the odds of rolling 4 misfires in the span of 6 rolls, and can you use the rune of forging twice in the same round of shooting? Justin opted not to on the fact that he felt it was beardy, I wasn't going to argue)

Turn 3 The lions charge the tower yet once again, the spearmen charge one of the cannons. Magic was really good and my mage in the spearman unit got of transformation of Kadon the which turned her into a Great Fire Dragon, that thing makes Greater Deamons whimper. The lions finished off the quarrelers and the engineer in the cannon unit wisely issued a change if only to slow down the now rampaging dragon unit. I accepted with my spearman champion who if he could manage to kill the engineer, then my dragon could easily finish off the rest of the crew, but unfortunately I needed 4+ to hit and rolled 2 2's. That being said HE have Always Strike First (ASF) and the higher initiative so I get to reroll misses, but I fail again and the engineer kills my champ. The dragon did nom the rest of the group. The dwarves then launched their own assault on the tower with their long beards during their turn and managed to leave 2 white lions alive. I should point out that my white lion champion had the same issues as my spearman champion and was unable to hit in 4 attempts. In another rules question we let the dwarves reform once the battle was over because they were no longer in combat. Other turn three happenings of note were the destruction of both bolt throwers, one by a wayward grudge thrower shot, and the dispelling of the Transformation of Kadon.

Turn 4. I had to do some thing fast I didn't want to charge the front of that mean dwarf unit with my phoenix guard and arch mage, but I couldn't give away the tower. So I repositioned my phoenix guard to take an oncoming charge but also charge the tower the next turn if need be, and sent my arch mage to the archer unit about 7" away. Then in a gamble of epic proportions the arch mage called the biggest comet of casandora possible right behind the tower. The dwarves were able to take out the lion chariot with a cannon shot this time making up for using nerf cannon balls the first time and caused 6 wounds. And in another epic feat the long beards charged the pheonix guard with a roll of 12 for its charge distance! Dwarves charging up to 15"!!!! Another challange was issued this time my champion hit one out of four times but failed to wound, ultimately I lost combat by 2 but we were steadfast due to having more ranks.

At the end of turn four we rolled to see if the match ended. I would end on a 6 and the comet would never come down. My gamble had paid off and I rolled a 6. The high elves stole the game. Just for grins and giggles we let the comet fall and while it wasn't big in radius, (just big enough for the tower) it did 14 str 8 hits to the unit in the tower.

All in all I had a great time, and yes this report is a little one sided If Justin finds anything to add please do.

1st 8th edition game pregame and 1st turn

Posted by Anonymous | Labels: | Posted On at Tuesday, July 13, 2010

I wrote out a battle report from last night's game but it was nearly two pages long in word, so I'm just gonna give you the highlights.
Both of us struggled a bit before the battle with army creation. Working with percentages instead of numbers of units makes the games very different for everyone. I decided to have some fun and just see how things worked and grabbed a lvl 4 Arch Mage with lore of the Heavens and a lvl 2 Mage with lore of beasts. (Quick side note; the rules read that if you role a duplicate spell "you must replace the duplicate spell with another of your choice from the same lore" p490. Does that mean if you role double that you get to pick the spell you want) I'm a little tentative about any close combat characters due to the fact that HE are so fragile and there are always going to be troops that can swing back.

We rolled the watch tower battle and for 7 other pieces of terrain. Terrain pieces included; watchtower, mysterious river, encampment of destruction with a charnel pit wyrding well, building, Nehekaran Sphynx, blessed bulwark, and a Mist-wreathed swamp. While I know some people are a little put off by the amount of terrain on the board, I kind of liked it do to another element of the game that is somewhat out of your control.

The dwarves won the watchtower, so after set up I got to move first. But before the first turn even happened the dwarven strollers rune activated and my ellyrian reavers are fast cav so they get vanguard. We didn't know who got to move first so we just rolled it off and the Dwarves took it. I sent my Ellyrian Reavers right into the water, one because it wasn't in harms way too much and two because I really wanted to know what it was. The move paid off because it was a River of Light, which has a lot of augment spell possibilities.

Turn one was bad rolling on everyone's behalf. My White Lion unit charged the tower that was 9" away, the quarrelers Stand and Shoot (SaS), the lions role a 3 for a charge of 8" and thus a failed charge and a move of only 2". My reavers try to set themselves up to charge the cannon next turn but to do so they have to ride through dangerous terrain and 2 out of 5 models role a 1 and die. Magic was good but dispelled. Two repeater bolt throwers managed to do 2 wounds to long beards. The dwarves didn't fare much better. Cannon one fires hits my cannon in my utter frustration I curse Justin's dice with the "anything but a one" hex and he fails to wound, Cannon two hits a repeater bolt thrower, wounds it, the only causes one wound. The grudge thrower was much more successful taking out a handful of white lions. End of turn one.

Welcome

I would just like to take a sec to welcome those from the Cosmic Castle in Roanoke! I consider you guys my local hobby store even though you are an hour away from me, and I really enjoy gaming and just hanging out there when I am able to. Hopefully this will be a place where you visit frequently just to read and discuss warhammer.

8th edition is here!!!!

Posted by Anonymous | | Posted On Friday, July 9, 2010 at Friday, July 09, 2010

I got my collectors edition in the mail today, and let me just say, it is AWESOME!

A new day has dawned and the glittering host prepares once again for battle. The balance of the world rests upon their shoulders, the winds of magic at their fingertips and the fate of all lay at their feet.

more details to come.

Warhammer 8th edition

Posted by Anonymous | | Posted On Thursday, June 24, 2010 at Thursday, June 24, 2010

So I got a read at the new rules, and the game is going to be radically different. Some good some bad...I'm gonna hit the major points here. Also keep in mind that I don't have the book in front of me, and this is all just a reflection of about a 1 hour read. Also keep in mind this is without play testing anything.

MOVEMENT MOVEMENT MOVEMENT:

Good news: they've clarified the rules enough that if you can make your unit do the electric slide.
News: (good or bad depending on your army) Charge is now your movement + 2d6. If you play dwarfs you should love this, elves or skaven hate this. WHY?
dwarf old charge = 6" new charge = 5"-15" Average 10"
human old charge = 8" new charge = 6"-16" average 11"
elf old charge = 10" new charge = 7"-17" average 12"
cavalry old charge = 16" new charge = 10"-20" average 16"
Percentage wise the dwarves get a HUGE boost in movement.

MEASUREMENT MEASUREMENT MEASUREMENT:
Pre-measure everything...even artillery.
To me this seems a little broken. I play a 40K guard army, I know how much tanks and ordnance can turn a tide. 40k balances this with cover saves, Fantasy doesn't have a cover save. Cover only makes it harder to hit, and you don't have to role to hit with artillery.

MAGIC MAGIC MAGIC:
Magic is hugely different. No more double 1s for miscast, but if you role double 6s you not only get irresistible force, but you also get a miscast. Casting is different and so is determining the amount of power and dispel dice. There are a few different types of spells, but all we looked at were the 6th spells because we were running out of time. The 6th spells are insane possible game winners. I'll toss the teaser out, Lore of Beasts can turn your Mage into a Dragon, either a baby dragon or an insane eats greater deamons for breakfast dragon.

Any specific questions just ask!

8th Edition!

Posted by JP Smith | Labels: | Posted On Tuesday, April 20, 2010 at Tuesday, April 20, 2010

Well, Warhammer 8th was announced on Sunday through the GW newsletter. And whether good or bad, changes are coming. One of the changes is more objective based scenarios (think 40k). I thinking Games Day is a must this year.

We will see what the upcoming weeks will bring in official announces, with July being the big date.

For some great rumor-roundups, check out the folks at Warseer.

Hello Again!

Posted by JP Smith | | Posted On Friday, April 16, 2010 at Friday, April 16, 2010

It's been awhile and there are several things going on around here.

Jason played in the first round of the Hobby Center WH Tournament back in February. After all the painting and planning, he lost of a stinkin' Daemon player. His opponent had an awesome, complete conversion army of the Chaos worshippers.

Next weekend the both of us will be battling it out at The S.I.E.G.E. in Chattanooga, TN. It is a huge game conversion with anything for boards games, pen and paper RPG, and Warhammer. The three main fantasy events are a 2500 pts GT-style 3 round tournament, a team tourney, and a massive 3000 pts battle-royal. So, I've been painting like a dwarf miner digging for the lost treasure of Karak Eight Peaks ;). For me, the highlight is the team tourney where the ancestral grudge between the elder races will be buried in the hopes of placing at the top.

So, that's the long and short of it. Other than that then new Orc Boar Boyz and River Trolls from GW. Both packages are all plastic and cheaper than their predecessors. Maybe there is hope that GW will update more of their line the same way. Additionally, both of us have decided to pick up 40k (Jason again and me for the first time). Jason is championing the Imperial Guard and I will be brawling it out with the Space Wolves. Perhaps there will be some 40k talk around here (+1 Invulnerable Save for a new name...).

Oh, on March 20, at 12:11 PM, I became a proud father for the first time. It rocks!

See you around and wish us good dice rounds.

NA tournament challange updateII

A huge thanks to my wife and friends, that helped me get everything ready for the tournament. I've always wanted to take part in one, but I've never had the motivation and speed to paint a full army. Today I leave for DC to take part in the NA tournament with my 2500 pt army. I have a fully painted army.....I'm so excited!

painting like a dog....

North American Warhammer Tournament Challange

Posted by Anonymous | Labels: | Posted On at Tuesday, February 09, 2010

So here's the deal, I'm gonna try and get enough models together and painted for the North American Warhammer Tournament. If I make it great, if not, at least I will have a lot more minis painted. I will keep you updated on my progress. Later!

Phoenix Guard

Posted by Anonymous | Labels: | Posted On at Tuesday, February 09, 2010

I've known it for a while, but never put it into practice with my High Elves....Black Primer coevers a multitude of mistakes.

When I started playing some 15 years ago I also started painting, and for some reason I started painting using a white primer, probably because I liked the way the colors popped. And I also found it difficult to get some colors to be true when painted over black. So when I started my high elf collection the were primed white. I've been through other armies, and primed them black and found it to be a positive experience, but couldn't bring myself to do it to me high elves....Until yesterday.

I primed my phoenix guard champion black, just to compare the results to my white lion champion. Not only do I like the phoenix guard better, but I finished him in about a tenth of the time. I'll try and post pictures later.

crafting the dragon

Posted by Anonymous | Labels: | Posted On Saturday, February 6, 2010 at Saturday, February 06, 2010

So I got the new high elf dragon in the mail the other day, and I finally got my plastic clippers back too =p. So today I set to putting together the dragon. I love the new plastic model. Its so much easier to work with than the mostly plastic partly metal dragon of the last edition. So far it seems to be smaller, than the old one, which is going to make it much easier to transport.

So far the only trouble I've had was in the legs. I had one leg glued on, and then for my next trick, I was going to put glue on the foot and hip of one leg, and glue it to the body and rocks while gluing the foot, which was on the body, to the rock. All while trying to not glue my fingers to the model.

More updates as I go.

High Elf Tactics III the worst unit in the list.

Posted by Anonymous | Labels: | Posted On Monday, February 1, 2010 at Monday, February 01, 2010

I didn't use to think this, and the guy that won the European GT used them, and I can see where in rare instances they could be beneficial. That being said Seaguard are just spearmen with crappy bows. I guess it doesn't help that I don't have much love for spearmen in the first place, but wen you take away the archers ability to hit things from 30 inches away, you move them into range of just about every other missile troop. To make matters worse, they are really expensive.

Ok, so when are the rare occasions that you should take them???

The only time I can see taking them is when you have to play multiple games, using the same list. Even then, I would probably just take archers.

Game night

Posted by Anonymous | Labels: | Posted On Friday, January 29, 2010 at Friday, January 29, 2010

I've decided to changed pace a ton for this match and finally introduce JP to magic....a lot of magic. Here is the list

1 Archmage with seerstaff
1 Mage with pendant of vengance (I think he knows I'm bringing a ton of magic so I'm planning on him having an anvil of doom)
1 Dragon Mage (this part is for me, I know its not super effective against Dwarfs, but lets see)

10 Archers
10 Archers
20 Phoenix Guard
20 White Lions
Bolt Thrower
Bolt Thrower

No basic plan other than plan A....What is plan A you ask? Kill kill, blood makes the grass grow green. Wow thats bad, I cant believe people used to chant that at football games. =p

High Roller

Posted by Anonymous | | Posted On Wednesday, January 27, 2010 at Wednesday, January 27, 2010

I'm gonna steer clear about saying too much about my luck on this blog, but a friend of mine told me that I should share a story with you. It has nothing to do with Warhammer, but instead it deals with Necromunda, another game that Games-Workshop makes.

The story takes place a few years ago when I was in college. I had a roommate with perhaps the best luck known to man. We were in my living room, which was part of a tiny college apartment, and we had a 4x4 table set up to play necromunda. I was playing the Spyrers, a small, elite force, and my roommate was playing House Delaque, which is just your average gang with a few living shields in it.

To make a long story short (kinda) I ran one of my spyrers through the shadows into more cover past one of my roommates rookie house members. After all of the modifiers, he needed a 6 followed by a 6 followed by a 5 just to hit me. No way its gonna happen right.....

So after he hit me he needed a 5 or better to wound me. His luck should run out sometime.....

After he wounded me I had 3 or better save. I can do this right.....

After I failed my save he had to roll to see how bad the wound was. On a 1 its a flesh wound on a 2-5 I was down and on a 6 he kills me for the game. His luck couldn't be that good could it?

statistically speaking his chances were 1 in 5832.

The best part is the the neighbors above, below, and next to us heard the final string snap on my barely sane world. In a fit of rage I ran into the kitchen and drop kicked the refrigerator door. Ran back to the room grabbed the die threw it across the room watched it ricochet off all four walls about 6 times each. Stalked back into my room grabbed my dremel, then proceeded to cut and drill into the die, before I finally calmed down.

I'm sure there is a moral to this story, and it probably has something to do with not feeding me after midnight, but I'll leave figuring it out up to you.

So what do you guys get when I get a day off from work?

Posted by Anonymous | | Posted On Monday, January 25, 2010 at Monday, January 25, 2010

Well, I finally painted the table. I purchased a nice shade of green, behr's herbal garden, and used it to cover the table. In our attempts to be economical we cut a few corners...

1) We didn't prime the board. I'm only slightly worried about this because I seem to have a very faint memory of painting a board without primer before, but the guy at Home Depot about lost it when I told him I wasn't going to prime it first. That being said, I did end up putting two coats of paint on it today.
2) We didn't put the sand in the paint to add texture. We had thought about adding sand to the paint in order to add texture, but in the long run tracking down less than a 50lbs bag of sand became more trouble than it was worth. Not to mention the pain a sand textured board causes. Sure it looks great, but when you try to slide a unit of 20 metal figs on a movement try and the front row falls because you hit a grain of sand......

Some positives include, highlighting the hills that we painted the other day. We started with a Dark Angels green as the base, and I was concerned that the Herbal Garden would too light, but it worked out fairly well.

Future plans include flocking parts of the table to add texture, and painting some more details into the hills. I hope to have pictures of the table up soon.

!?!?! yeah, thats about all I can say about it

Posted by Anonymous | | Posted On Sunday, January 24, 2010 at Sunday, January 24, 2010

Well, everything kinda went as planned, but I was still on the wrong side of a draw.

I more-or-less controlled the left flank and managed to ignore some rangers in the woods, which ended up costing me a table corner, but I destroyed the Gyrocopter and the two bolt throwers that were over there. One of my Phoenix guard caught one of the bolts and used it as a toothpick, so the spearmen were the target of choice from then on out, which was what I wanted in the first place.

The Organ gun was another story. JP had it entrenched this time so I was unable to shoot it down from long range. That being said, it was pretty ineffective for most of the game only doing 2 hits a turn against my spearmen. Finally, on the last turn I finished off the crew leaving only the master engineer.

The right flank was a different story, and perhaps I should have seen it coming. I got a little over confident because of my dominance on the side where he had little to nothing, and decided to charge his unit of longbeards with my white lions in the front and a unit of dragon princes in his flank, knowing that the white lions would be taking a flank charge the very next turn if I didn't break them. So two big surprises...one he has an oath stone, which gives his no flanks, and two he has a BSB, and a rune that makes him cause fear, and my dragon princes don't charge. Needless to say, not only did he not break from combat, but I actually lost combat...good thing I'm stubborn. This happened in the top of turn three. During his turn my lions got flank charged, but again we held at the end of combat. Next turn both my Lion Chariot and my dragon princes hit the flank, but they only turned the tide for 2 combats. Long story short at the top of the 6th JP slew my BSB and routed my White Lions and my chariot, and in the bottom he routed my Dragon Princes.

In conclusion, I'm inconclusive on the necessity to hero up in a high elf army. But also that I apparently play the part of a high elf general too well in real life...overconfident...One of these days I'll have to go magic heavy on him, and see how that works out for me.

tonight's game (no pics yet the tables not painted)

Posted by Anonymous | Labels: | Posted On at Sunday, January 24, 2010

2000 pts against Dwarfs

1 Prince Heavy Armor and Great Weapon

1 Noble BSB with the Battle Banner (only magic item) heavy armor

10 Archers
10 Archers
24 Spear Men

20 White Lions c/s/m
20 Phoenix Guard c/s/m
5 Dragon Princes
1 White Lion Chariot

1 Eagle
1 Bolt Thrower
1 Bolt Thrower

So, a slightly different list than normal.

Playing Dwarfs gives me the ability to not take any magic if I don't want to. I'm not a big fan of the 24 spearmen, but we got them in the hopes that they will soak up missile fire. Love the archers, phoenix guard, white lions, eagle, and bolt thrower. As much as I love the Dragon Princes and Lion Chariot I'm afraid they will be the target of a cannon ball early on in the game.

This is my attempt to prove the usefulness of the standard high elf infantry over characters and magic. Without seeing the table yet, the game plan is to Place the core of my army in the middle of the board, and use my chariot and Dragon Princes on the flanks where hopefully I can both avoid the cannon and turn the flank on my sluggish dwarven foe. Well, thats it for now I keep hearing JP say "oh" and "that's interesting" as he rounds out the rest of his army list for tonight's battle.

2,001 pts against High Elves by JP

15 Longbeards with shields and full command.
10 Thunderers
10 Warrior Rangers with a veteran, throwing axes, shields, and great weapons.
15 Hammerers with shield, a gate keeper, and standard.

2 Bolt Throwers with the Rune of Penetration and Engineers with braces of pistols.
1 Organ Gun
1 Gyrocopter

1 Thane with shield as the Army Battle Standard and Oath Stone. Master Rune of Fear on the standard and the Rune of Resistance on the armor.
2 Runesmiths with great weapons, the Master Rune of Spellbinding, and Master Rune of Gromril.
1 Master Engineer with a great weapon, brace of pistols, and Rune of Warding.
1 Lord with shield, Master Rune of Alaric the Mad, Rune of Resistance, and Master Rune of Gromril.

I had a feeling that Jason would not use magic, so I did not choose a Runelord with the Anvil of Doom. But 2 Runesmiths in case he did try something. From left to right on the board, my setup was: Rangers in the woods, gyrocopter, Runesmiths, bolt throwers on hill, Thunderers on the ground, Organ Gun dead middle, Hammerers with the Lord, and Longbeards with the Thane and Oath Stone. I knew my left side was weak. I planed moving the Hammerers over to the hill, but it did not happen.

The Thunderers was the first to go, then the bolt throwers. My dice rolls, mostly, were misses or no wounds. Very unlike myself. The gyrocopter did little damage to the Phoenix Guard, but tried up the Great Eagle. Long story short, my Oath Stone saved the day. In the last round I was able to receive victory points from the White Lions, Lion Chariot, and Dragon Princes. In the end, Jason's vp was Thunders, 2 bolt throwers, 1 Runesmith, gyrocopter, half on the longbeards, and half on the Organ Gun. When we totaled the points, I had 90 more. What I thought was a lost, turned into a draw.

I learned several things with this battle. First, never give up, no matter what. Second, also take a Master Engineer. He allows a war machine to be entrenched (hard cover penalty when shoot at). Third and lastly, the Oath Stone rocks! (Ok, cheap pun). With the Oath Stone and the always challenge rule, I was able to take out the White Lion campion and the Noble with the Battle standard.

Tactics Pt II or Spearmen, an exercise in futility

Posted by Anonymous | Labels: | Posted On Thursday, January 21, 2010 at Thursday, January 21, 2010

Spearmen are perhaps the second biggest disappointment in the entire list IMO. Lets look at the positive first. You attack first no matter what and you fight in three ranks if you don't charge. Just a quick note on strategy before the math. NEVER CHARGE A MELEE UNIT WITH SPEARMEN unless worse things will happen to you if you don't. The only difference between charging spearmen and holding spearmen is that the charging spearmen lose their third rank.

So again to the math.
Charged by dwarfs. Okay, sorry that's too unrealistic. Charged by Black Orcs. Lets also say you are going with a 6 man front (which is really the way to go) you get 19 attacks (because you have a chanmpion and 3 ranks). Hitting on 4s, so 10 hits, wounding on 5s, so 3 wounds. Good news is they may have just light armor, so you probably kill 3 orcs if the dice are in your favor. Their turn, 2 guys get to swing back, but they are probably using two choppas and one guy is a champion, so 5 swings back htting on 4s, 3 wounds wounding on 2's the first turn, so probably 3 high elves die the first turn because the elves won't get a save resulting in a draw....

A draw against a charging unit of black orcs!!!! thats awesome!!!

Unfortunately, what I've found is that your spearmen aren't going to be charged by those black orcs, instead they will have to try their luck against cav. So lets use Empire knights, the to hits are the same, so 10 hits wounding on 4s so 5 wounds. 1+ save though so only one dies....their turn, 5 attacks so 3 hits, killing on 2s so three die... so if its 10 knights you are now out numbered. Score High elves 1 kill +2 ranks = 3 Empire 3kills + outnumbering = 4....but don't forget about the horses...statistically speaking they should only kill one, but lets face it the horses always do more damage than the riders. Ultimately, you should lose by 2.

To make matters worse, if you get charged in the flank or rear, you might as well just hand them the unit.

Okay, so let me put my nerd theory glasses down. Even though the numbers aren't atrociously bad, the results in practice always seem to be much worse. The reason for this is because it is very easy for opposing armies to beef up their offensive output through characters to counter the loss of regular guys. High elves have no real way of beefing up their defense, so putting a character in the unit is risky at best, and there are much better choices.

Elven Tactics

Okay, so here goes my first game related post...Elven tactics as seen by, well, me. I've been a high elf player for 15 years, and while some things have changes, a lot of things are still the same.

This is going to be a very in depth approach spread out over a few installments.

When I build my army, the last decisions I make are my hero choices. The great thing about high elves is that the average unit is great! Its only weakness is going to be its low toughness, but your hero choice will suffer from the same drawbacks.

So I'm gonna tackle Core units first.
Archers. I know a few of people will disagree with me, but this is a need to take unit. I hear people constantly talking about how ineffective shooting is in warhammer, and they are right if you misuse it. The biggest mistake I see is that people try to use their archers to cause panic checks....

Lets look at the math against a stout dwarf army. Your gonna be at long range so -1 to hit. So lets say you have 10 archers hitting on 4s, so 5 hits, wounding on 5s so 1 and a half wounds...we'll say 2. Now they get their save, heavy armor, shield, so 4+ armor save, so 1 guy dies. So if its a unit of 20 dwarfs, you would need 50 archers to cause a panic test if the numbers are average...

Okay, so maybe dwaves are a bad choice....Goblins, less points though, so bigger units. 10 archers 5 hits still, 2.5 wounds we will say 3. Light armor, shield so 5+ armor save, so 2 guys die. So if its a unit of 30 dwarfs you would need 25 archers to cause a panic test in GOBLINS! Thats 275 pts to cause a panic on one measly goblin unit.

So what are they good for??? taking out war machines especially organ guns (an elf's worst enemy). 10 archers 5 hits 3 hit the war machine (useless), 2 hit the crew, and you are likely to kill one because they typically have little to no armor. So you would need a few more than 30 archers to take out 1 war machine. BTW 1 war machine > than unit of goblins.

So the argument stands is it worth it? Strictly points wise...no. But you should look at it as the archers are paper to a war machines rock to your dragon princes scissors. To help cut back on points go strictly vanilla archers no command.

Ok so maybe I'm only gonna tackle archers in this post...=p Next post spearmen....the brutally less than mediocre spearmen...

Well, here is the start of all things Warhammer and some not. If you are not familiar with the game or Games Workshop, please check them out here.

I've just started with this thing called Warhammer, thanks to Jason. Currently, I play a dwarf army with a Orc and Goblin army in the wings.

Our goals for this humble site are:
1. Journal our battles and tactics.
2. Showcase our models and terrain.
3. Gather and share information about everything Warhammer / Games Workshop.
4. World domination!

I'm sure from time to time there will be the occasional off-topic postings. But whatever the subject, it will be entertaining.

Cheers!

Welcome to 1+ ward save. We hope you enjoy your visit!

I've been playing Warhammer for since 3rd edition (I think, whichever box set had orcs and goblins versus high elves) which I think was about 15 years ago. During that time I've worked as a games guy for a HobbyTown in TN which was perhaps one of the most entertaining jobs I had. My Saturdays consisted of running games of Warhammer and Warhammer 40k. I love to play, but I am the SLOWEST painter on the planet. Like I said I've been playing for 15 years, and I still don't have a completely painted army...That's gonna change...I promise.

Soon after that I moved to this tiny little town, that has absolutely no gaming store, but I did have two armies. So that brings us to where we are now. I've managed to get someone else hooked on the game, and we managed to find a place besides my apartment to play.

More later....
